New Westminster Station will integrate 200,000 square feet of retail space with the New Westminster SkyTrain Station, the New Westminster Bus terminal, and four towers consisting of 1,059 residential units in an Urban Transit Village. This development is an example of the "future" of retail projects, which cater to the density in the neighbourhood and provide non-vehicle oriented shopping options, as transportation costs continue to rise. Retailers are aware of this trend, and have shown an unprecedented amount of interest in the project. New Westminster has a trade area of 94,196 people and is expected to grow to 110,619 by the year 2012. In addition to the residents living on site, 109,940 pass through this Skytrain station on average per week.
